ASP Introduction

  • ASP stands for Active Server Pages
  • ASP Is a product of Microsoft Corporation.
  • ASP is server side scripting language that can be used to to create abd run dynamic, interactive, high performance webs Applicatiions.
  • ASP is a program that runs inside Personal Web Server (PWS) or Internet Information Server(IIS).
  • Internet Information Server is a Web Server that executes ASP Code.

What is an ASP File?
An ASP file is a text file that contains HTML, XML Tags, Text and scripts. The scripts in ASP files are excuted on the server. The file extension of ASP file is ".asp".

How to install ASP and IIS on Windows XP/2000 Professional

Insert the CD of Windows 2000/XP in your CD ROM.
1. Open your control panel. Click Start -> then Settings -> then Control Panel
2. Select and Open "Add or Remove Programs"
3. On the left column of the popup window select "Add or Remove Windows Components"
4. Scroll down until you see Internet Information Services (IIS)
5. If IIS is not checked then check it, otherwise you already have IIS installed on your computer
6. Click Next and follow the on screen instructions from the installer
7. When it has completed, open up Internet Explorer and type in http://localhost
8. If IIS was install appropriately you should be taken to the welcome screen http://localhost/localstart.asp

Caution:
You cannot view the ASP source code by selecting "View source" in a browser, you will only see the output from the ASP file, which is plain HTML. This is because the scripts are executed on the server before the result is sent back to the browser.

Running an ASP Web Page

Before execute ASP code, make your have you install IIS. the
1. Open up "My Computer" or "Windows Explorer" .
2. Select and Open the C drive (C:)
3. Double click the Inetpub folder
4. Double click the wwwroot folder
5.Save your file in wwwroot folder with extension ".asp".
